Artist Statement

I am Rowan Whittington, a multi-media artist working between Norfolk and Birmingham. My work explores memory and personal experiences, with a particular focus on coming of age into womanhood. I frequently make references to the body through wearability or interactivity.

My practice is in sculpture and installation, particularly exploring scale when working, jumping between intricate hand stitched text to wall sized paintings exploring colour and mark making. I have a focus on textiles within this, using reclaimed fabrics as surfaces and traditional crafts such as crochet and embroidery to solidify a connection to the past. Sustainability is crucial to my practice, in which I am conscious of how my art impacts the world around me and how I can minimise it. I use recycled materials as often as possible and am beginning to introduce a criticism of modern society and technological obsession within my work.
